What is your favorite time of the year to fish? During the melt off in the spring, the water is high and the bugs are large here on the Conejos. This time of the year is challenging, but can pay off in some great fishing opportunities.

What rod do you fish with? Sage Z-Axis 9ft 6wt with a fighting butt. The sensitive tip and hidden back bone of the Z-Axis is crucial in my opinion when using nymphs and in hook sets. This rod will throw anything from heavy nymph rigs to the tightest loops needed for the dry fly fisherman.

dougDr. Douglas Camp is a retired music teacher who has taught instrumental music in one form or another at all levels of instruction, beginner through college graduation. A native of rural Arkansas and the son of a lifelong, passionate fisherman, Doug can’t remember when he didn’t fish. He first visited the Rocky Mountain West 25 years ago on a vacation from Dallas with his wife. Since that initial trip, he has spent considerable time studying, researching and fly fishing the streams and lakes of the southern Rockies, both as a pastime and an avocation. In addition, he has studied fly tying with Charles Meck, Mike Lawson, Gary LaFontaine and Jack Dennis and is a noted instructor in his own right having taught courses for years at Los Rios Anglers in Taos, New Mexico.
